GWAA Region III Director

Garden Writers Association of America
Region III Conference
May 10 and 11, 2002
Indianapolis Museum of Art
Indianapolis, Indiana

On Track with Indy Gardens
The gorgeous grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art will be the
setting of Indy’s first GWAA Region III Conference on May 10 and 11, 2002.
The local team has organized tours of various gardens, from the oldest
neighborhood in the city to the suburbs to one of the area’s newest gardening
attractions.
Spring gardens in Indianapolis will have ephemerals, bulbs, early blooming
perennials, flowering trees and shrubs with a few cool-season annuals thrown
in…weather permitting! The city will be decked out for the first qualifying
weekend of the 2002 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, so the Crossroads of America
should look its best.
And while others race for the pole, we’ll be strolling through some great
gardens that have already qualified as winners. Here’s a preview:

The Indianapolis Museum of Art, 1200 West 38th Street, 317.923.1331
The IMA's grounds and gardens are renowned for their beauty, elegance and
history. The museum's 152 acres include: Oldfields, the 26-acre American
Country place estate that once belonged to J.K. Lilly Jr., the museum's
26-acre main campus, and the 100-acre Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature
Park, which is currently under development.
There’s beauty inside the museum, too. Featured exhibits during the GWAA
Region III visit are Van Gogh and the Labors of the Fields and The Fabric of
Moroccan Life. For more information about the IMA, visit the Web site:
www.ima-art.org.
The IMA is just west of the intersection of U.S. 421 (Michigan Road/Martin
Luther King Drive) and West 38th Street. The IMA is about a mile east of the
I-65/West 38th Street Exit and about a mile west of U.S. 31 (North Meridian
Street) and 38th Street (Meridian Street is Indianapolis’ East/West divider…
East 38th Street becomes West 38th Street at Meridian.) (FYI -- There is a
major construction/expansion project under way at the IMA, but parking will
be available. Just follow the signs. On Friday, we will gather at the DeBoest
Lecture Hall in the main museum building.)

Program
Friday, May 10, 2002
DeBoest Lecture Hall, Main Building, Indianapolis Museum of Art

11 a.m.to 1 p.m. Registration, lunch and guided walking tours of the
Indianapolis Museum of Art grounds/exhibits. Tours begin at 11:30 a.m. and
noon.

1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Program presented by IMA horticultural staff about the best
plants on the grounds and what new plants horticulturists are studying.

2 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Break/board bus.

2:30 p.m. leave IMA for Lockerbie Square.

3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Self-guided walking tour of historic Lockerbie Square
neighborhood downtown.
A mix of Italianate, Federal and Queen Anne homes stand next to quaint
cottages in Lockerbie Square, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods.
Gardeners here will be getting ready for the Lockerbie d’affair, a tour held
every other year. The famous Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley, lived in
Lockerbie and wrote about the community as "nestled away from the noise of
the city and heat of the day." Houses along brick-paved streets date from the
mid-1800s to award-winning new construction that is nearly indistinguishable
from the old.

3:45 p.m. Leave Lockerbie for White River Gardens.

4 p.m. to 5 p.m. tour White River Gardens/Conservatory.
The White River Gardens is a sister institution to the Indianapolis Zoo.
Located in downtown Indianapolis, the beautiful 3.3-acre landmark botanical
attraction is actually an "idea garden" where visitors can see and experience
innovative garden displays and gather information for duplication at their
own homes. A 5,000-square-foot, glass-enclosed conservatory features special
exhibits throughout the year. Outdoor demonstration gardens are composed of
five elements: design garden, shade garden, sun garden, water garden and
wedding garden. WRG is among the newest gardening attractions in the city.
For more information about White River Gardens, visit the Web site:
www.whiterivergardens.com.

5 p.m. Leave White River Gardens for Sunken Garden at Garfield Park.
5:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. tour Sunken Garden/Conservatory
Begun in the 1870s, Garfield Park is the city’s oldest. In 1881, the park was
named in honor of President James A Garfield. In 1895, the park began serving
the horticultural and floral culture needs of Indianapolis. The Pagoda, a
south side icon, was opened in 1903. In 1915 the new greenhouses and
Conservatory were built. The dedication of the Sunken Garden took place
October 29, 1916. In 1922, the shelter house was open to the public for
indoor fun and family activities. The Garfield Amphitheater also opened in
1922, with the swimming pool opening in 1930.
The jewel of the park is the 2 1/2-acre Victorian-style Sunken Garden. Three
lovely fountains grace the beautiful grounds adding architectural interest to
the outstanding gardens. During the visit, the spring planting will be under
way. The Conservatory features a 7,500-square-foot Amazon River Region
Tropical Rainforest with a 15-foot waterfall and hundreds of Central and
South American plant species. For more information about Garfield Park, visit
the Web site: http://www.indygov.org/indyparks/content/park_garfield.html.

5:45 p.m. Leave Garfield Park for tour of John Herbst’s garden downtown.

6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. tour, wine and cheese at Herbst garden. Queen Anne style
home has Victorian gardens. John Herbst is president of Conner Prairie.

7:15 p.m. Bus leaves downtown to return to IMA. Dinner on your own.

Saturday

8 a.m. Breakfast at Conner Prairie, 13400 Allisonville Road, Fishers, Ind.,
for breakfast/program/tour. Drive yourself. Maps will be available at
registration desk on Friday.
Conner Prairie is a 19th century living history museum, which will be
celebrating Spring Fest during the GWAA visit. The gardens emphasize heirloom
plants and are divided according to their purpose…medicinal gardens, kitchen
gardens, etc.
A visit to Conner Prairie is a journey to another time. It serves as a
local, regional and national center for research and education about the
lives, times, attitudes and values of early 19th-century settlers in the Old
Northwest Territory, based upon the Indiana experience. Conner Prairie
features a modern Museum Center, special facilities, and five historic areas:
the 1836 village of Prairietown, the 1823 William and Elizabeth Conner Home,
the PastPort Discover Area, 1816 Lenape Camp and our newest area, 1886
Liberty Corner. The museum and historic areas are set on a 210-acre site
featuring wooded areas and orchards along the White River in central Indiana.
For more information about Conner Prairie, visit the Web site:
www.connerprairie.org.

10 a.m. leave Conner Prairie for IMA.

10:30 p.m. arrive IMA.

10:45 a.m. to noon tour IMA Oldfields/Ravine Garden.
At the center of the museum's 152-acres is Oldfields, the former country home
of the J.K. Lilly Jr., family. The home and grounds have been restored to
show how families lived in their houses and their gardens more than 70 years
ago. GWAA members will get a preview of the gardens and home, which will have
a grant opening in mid-June. The gardens were designed in the 1920s by the
Olmstead Brothers of Brookline, Mass. For more information about Oldfields,
visit the Web site: www.ima-art.org

Noon – 1:30 p.m. Lunch, visit the IMA Greenhouse.

1:30 p.m. board bus for tour of 3 to 4 private gardens.

4 p.m. return to IMA. End of conference
