Re: Going native in USA Today

Dear everybody, Can't we leave it at the idea that a mown lawn of mostly
common turfgrasses is for small children to crawl and stumble on and pretend
to play soccer, but most of the time people do not need a space that is big
enough to entertain 200 adults meandering in circles while grasping a glass
of Gallo's tastiest product? Most of us might actually prefer "crazy paving"
with Sagina or something similar and a surrounding that actually changes
every few days.
From the green industry standpoint it is easier to find enough people to
maintain a Christopher Lloyd kind of "Mixed Border" even an expanded sort,
than the large numbers to push mowers. Yes, pushing mowers is pretty
mindless compared to managing four espaliered apple trees, but the total time
per season is less. Furthermore, does it make sense to send people to
college to end up pushing a mower, or riding one, all day?
Perhaps we could encourage people to have a 5 or 10 year plan to change from
lots of turfgrass to the kind of landscape that might have been in their
backyard 500 yrs ago? It seems that the first thing to consider in planning
what is planted around a residence, or possibly any other building where
people spend long periods of time, is what will lure people to go outside and
walk around for a minute or two. It has also become obvious that in urban
areas people need to get together more to share knowledge, plants, labor with
each other. That kind of thing is just starting with the help of several
advocacy groups in Boston and surrounding communities, it could certainly
happen in places with population of 10,000. People who have a pulpit have a
responsibility to use it for community good.
