RE: Digest for Gardenwriters@topica.com, issue 410
Re: Sungold and other famous vegetables:
Here's an observation based on the first Sungold posting to this list. The
writer said something about that tomato being a "Thompson and Morgan
variety".
Until I worked for a seed company, I actually thought that places like T &
M, Johnny's, Territorial Seeds, etc. grew their own seeds. Don't ask me
why, I suppose I just never examined it that closely.
Of course, this is not the case, and would be impossible, since it requires
acres and acres of land. Seed companies (including "organic") purchase in
bulk, package and sell seeds from major seed producers like Tokita in
Japan, Vilmorin in France, and others, including the interestingly-named
"Known You" seed company in China. Much of the beet/chard seed used in
North America, for instance, is grown in Washington State in the area
around Mt. Vernon.
So, when you buy seed for...say, Purple Queen bush beans, it doesn't matter
what seed company you order it from, as all of it comes from the same
possible couple of seed suppliers. There are exceptions: some of the newer,
smaller companies actually raise their own seeds. But as you can imagine,
it's hard for them to compete.
I hope I haven't just revealed that Santa Claus does not exist for anyone.
