I wrote one column on it early last fall, when they were planning to
implement the change in mid-September. There's a very large Basque
population in this area (southern Idaho), and they want to grow Basque
peppers. They've been in the habit of going back to Guernica to get fresh
seeds every so often, and I thought they ought to know what they'd be
facing. I haven't heard reverberations yet. Basque peppers are quite
mild, incidentally, and not attractive to chile-heads.
I too have traded seeds in many parts of the world, and I'm extremely angry
about this change. That plus the so-called "white" list indicates to me
that parts of the USDA are working counter to the best interests of the
