Re: French tulips

Several years ago --- as many as 15 ---- while working at Longwood Gardens, I forced bulbs for the spring show in the Conservatories.  We were able to have narcissus blooming as early as the Christmas Show starting in November.  We brought in pre-cooled bulbs from Holland to achieve the November and December bloom but this process did not work for tulips due to the harvesting time.  Eventually management asked us to find a way to have tulips for that winter/holiday display.  We considered cooling the tulips ourselves as we had the facilities but the problem still remained the harvest time in Holland.  Among much of what we were able to learn from the bulb experts in Holland and our dear friend Brent Heath is that the French could harvest earlier due to climate and we were able to purchase these bulbs and proceed with the program.  We referred to them as "French Bulbs."

I have no idea if this is the information you need but I thought I would pass it along to you.

Since my days at Longwood -- I have not been involved with forcing bulbs and I have not kept up with all the newest methods or cultivars but I am sure Brent and Becky Heath could help you with more information.

Someone has asked me what a French tulip is.  I've scoured my resources and only come up with the fact that they have long stems, are fancy and nice for cuts...but nothing horticultural or botanical.  Does anyone have any insights?  Thanks
