Re: Pricing photography job

Melanie -- what you describe is work for hire and you can set your fee to whatever the market will bear. When it's work for hire, the product belongs to whomever hired you. A lot of writers and photographers don't like work for hire, but it doesn't bother me as long as I get paid. A lot of times you can use what's published by the client as part of your portfolio or marketing materials, even if there's no credit line.

I charge an hourly rate ($100) for work-for-hire photography. Most professional photographers charge hourly or daily rates. In Indianapolis, it ranges from about $400 to $800 a day, unless it's a really high-end shooter. So a half day would be in the $250 to $400 range. The fee should cover set up and tear down, if it's a studio shot. Does that compensate you? You always want to cover your expenses, so if you want to itemize the film and processing, do so. Travel time can be billed, but most everyone I know bills travel at half their hourly rate.

I have a client where everything is last minute. If the last minute involves working weekends or odd times to compensate for his lack of planning, I charge a premium, usually 10 percent of the total job.

I think when it comes to setting your price, you should take into account market considerations, but also what you are comfortable with and what compensates you.

If the photos are of interest to you, say as a presentation of landscape design or some other program, you might be able to get permission (as part of a contract) from the client to use them in non-print or other applications that might conflict with his uses. If that could be agreed to, you could make more money off the photos from your presentations.

This weekend a prominent local landscaper approached me with a photography
job. His landscape clients are wealthy Long Islanders with estates. He
advertises in magazines and is often up for awards which are judged by
photographs.

Currently he uses an out of state photographer who is not always available.
The photographer keeps all negatives and charges him each time they are
used.

The landscaper would like me to shoot a trial roll for him. He needs a
photographer who lives locally, can show up on short notice to take
photographs and would be willing to sell all negatives to him at one
pre-arranged cost. He's asked me to set my price for such a job.

I don't want to price myself out of line and yet want to be fairly
compensated. Should I offer a flat fee per job or add on incidentals such as
travel time, number of rolls of film and so on?

Does anybody else do something similar?

Thanks in advance,
Melanie Vassallo
