book royalties

I am curious about how book publishers report sales to writers.  My contract for a book that was published in April stipulates that number of sales are to be reported by the end of December and royalties are to be paid by the end of June (for books sold the previous year i.e. 2004).   Is this typical?  What assurance do authors have that publishers' figures are accurate?  Please share any experience either on list or offline.    Margot Rochester
