Jeff, Alaskan gardeners must be smarter than those down below, because I know many people use the product without reading the warnings, without regard to their proximity to water, and without the knowledge of the fact that the "inactive" ingredients may do far more damage than the "active" chemicals. This study was important and as Garden communicators, we should be advising others of the danger.
No one addressed the issue of the chemicals seeping into ground water, and eventually ponds, streams. Just because we don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen! Water contamination doesn't just occur when someone dumps a bucket (or trainload) of poison in the lake. It happens everytime we fertilize our lawns, spray herbicides/insecticides on our gardens.
Our most limited resource, fresh water, is being contaminated because we want "perfection" in nature. The label may say destructive to aquatic animals, but it sure doesn't say anything about how applying it on the lawn, it can get into the water and cause death to the frogs.
Did you ever do a "web of life" activity? We are fools to think any "cide" is not harming us, too.
Lynn
PS I'm really looking forward to the conference call with Scott/Miracle Gro...I'm curious to see what kind of spin they will try on the more well-read/experienced gardeners. They sure have pulled the wool down via their ads to the general public!

9. New study on Glyphosate toxicity (Global, Planet Earth)
From: Debra Nelson (dnelson@dnrmail.state.il.us)
(Debra forwarded an email with contributions from various weed scientists,
commenting on a recent study by a University of Pittsburgh biologist Rick
Relyea who found that applying RoundUp to a tank containing amphibians
killed them.)
Robert Szafoni noted: "It was very gratifying to see so many folks respond
to this with the correct observation that the researcher tested a herbicide
in a manner for which it is not listed - Round-up over water. The study
even noted that the surfactant was far more lethal to the amphibians than
the active ingredient. This is the second time in the last two years that a
"new" study showed herbicide impacts to amphibs by testing products in an
inappropriate manner. Bottom line...read and follow the label."
Debra Nelson noted: "There is good reason to be sure you use the "aquatic
approved" version of herbicides when applying around water!">>>>>>>>
