How much are we influenced
I relate to the good PRby good, responsive PR?
I work for a nursery and write a stand-alone column for our local paper. I was writing this column before I took the nursery job. I actually count up the number of times I mention each nursery or garden centre outlet in our area to make sure I'm not focussing on one more than another.
Why this preamble? Because in January I contact every garden store within a 50 mile radius of my paper's town and ask them if they have seminars, workshops etc. Just as the season is about to get going (and after the managers should know what nursery stock and hard goods they'll be getting) I do the same thing asking them for their "picks" of the year.
Gives them free press and lets my readers know who's doing what. I figure it helps everyone out with equal opportunity. 3 or 4 of the nurseries give me reams of stuff, several pass on the highlights but the majority never respond. Then I get blasted from the guys who didn't respond about not being mentioned.
When the co-operative guys call me during the year, they'll probably get a paragraph at the tag end of the column, i.e., Bob smith of ABC called to let me know they have the new gizmoplant in.
To tie into to D's brooding, Miracle Gro would get a mention, Scott's not but, because, for example, NIC or Monsanto returned my calls with lots of material, they'll probably get more press. However I might want to balance things, I know I am influenced by that.
then again, I'm a gardening columnist ( in this personna) and not a research scientist.
