Re: Doug Green's Cucumber

What did one pickle say to the other? You mean a great dill to me...

Ah - sorry folks. That was meant as a private message to John. Do me a
favour and don't tell anybody about the cucumber. If any of you are
interested, please contact me offlist and I'll put you on the list.

Thanks

Doug

Jeez John - what ground are you keeping your ears tuned to? I've only told
a few folks about this.

Turns out that there's this plant geek out here that's very much a modern
Luther Burbank. Just like Burbank could do things with plants that defied
logic and the rules of botany, this guy does the same kinds of things.
Burbank gave us thornless brambles - this fellow has given us a new tasting
cucumber.

When I was buying my new place on Amherst Island last year (and I'm looking
forward to doing some sailing with you this summer btw on your way to the
perennials conference in Montreal) I was told about this guy. So I went
visiting (always on the lookout for a good story) :-)

He was pretty proud of these pickles his wife had just made and insisted I
try some. They were indeed a very tart, very dill pickle for sure. Excellent
pickles and I complimented his wife profusely (as she was feeding me coffee
and tarts as well - keep 'em coming)

Well, the old guy had a pretty funny face on him - (like he'd just "got"
another city guy) and insisted I take a bite of this raw cucumber (he sliced
it up on a plate in front of me). Well, the darn thing tasted exactly like
the pickles.

I couldn't believe it but Dr. Loof (a retired medical doc) took me (his
first "famous" garden writer) :-) to his garden and let me pick one of my
own cukes right off the vine. I took a bite right there and the thing
tasted like dill pickles.

Turns out he somehow meditated with the cucumbers and the dill and convinced
them to cross-breed. Don't ask me "how" he did it - I just know he did.

So in order to make dill pickles, all you do is put the cucumber in a jar,
pour in some vinegar and you have instant dill pickles.

Do you know how much this could revolutionize the pickling industry?

Now, as you know I'm mostly been in perennials all my nursery life but even
I could recognize what this guy had. I convinced him a big veg company
would pay handsomely for this seed and we'd have to patent it. So I have
some lawyers (can you say expensive?) running up the plant patent laws for
the plant and I managed to get around 200 seeds from his crop last year.
The cucumber isn't seedless but nearly so - makes seed collecting and
bulking up really slow (the only downside to commercial use of them so far)
but is great for the pickling industry.

We're negotiating with a few of the larger houses right now for propagation
and distribution rights so as soon as the legalese is all taken care of, the
world will be ready for the 'Lirpa Loof' cucumber. He named it after his
daughter - I think the name is Ukrainian or somewhere over there but who
knows. The winner in the bidding war will get 100 seeds and I'll save 100
for promotional purposes.

I'm thinking of sending 2-3 seeds to each of my gwa/gwl friends to see what
kind of publicity we can generate for them. Interested?

I'm not sure who else to send them to but will likely spread them as wide as
I can to get some geographic testing as well as promotional efforts. If you
have suggestions for folks to send to from your marketing list - let me
know. I want to hit both large and small markets where vegetable growing
still happens and they might be interested in this new cultivar.

(I note it comes with a legal contract saying you won't sell the stuff etc
but that's par for the course with something like this as you know from your
perennial marketing work)

Let me know what you think -

Doug
p.s. please don't tell anybody about this - I really don't want it getting
out until we're ready to announce. Big time secret and I'll buy you an extra
beer this summer if you keep it quiet.

Subject: [GWL] Doug Green contact?

All,
could someone please supply Doug Green's contact info? I've heard he's
discovered, or developed, or maybe stolen some marvellous new cucumber or
gourd --
one of those cylindrical things. I need more info, but I've misplaced his
digits.
Can someone help, ASAP? Time is tight.
Thanks.
