Re: food gardening up or down? - Farmers Market

I raised bees in the suburbs of Philadelphia for a few years. I used
to tend to them in shorts and a tee shirt. In two years I was stung
three times and every time was my fault. I can't imagine a city
banning bees. this world is getting crazier and crazier.

There seems to be a movement afoot to outlaw bees. Our city council
(Boise, ID) has outlawed beekeeping within the city limits, so if one
lives within a mile and a half of the city limits, they should be
able to have bee activity to pollinate fruit trees. I live near the
edge of the city, but between me and the city limits are an
interstate, airport and National Guard base, no beekeepers among
them. I know there are other pollinators, but the leafcutters and
beneficial insects don't come out until later. It's too late for the
mason bees because they've already hatched. I know there are
individuals who are allergic to bee stings, but how often do they
really sting? Can't an epi pen save a life? Must these people
banish bees just because they don't want to carry an epi pen? I
haven't been stung by a bee for 65 years.

Other factors limiting home orchards and veggie gardens are
developers' restrictions that are worked into covenants (no flowers
in the front yard, etc.) and the small lot sizes for McMansions that
limit sunlight. Margaret Lauterbach

Jeff's comments seem to be on target, but there are additional
factors
involved in the decision to plant vegetable gardens or home orchards.

The cost of land/housing in California and the increasing cost of
potable water are influencing what people devote to landscape/food
production considering the limited lots sizes of ($550,000) median
price
   housing in San Diego.

Anyone else have some observations or comments?
