I have not bought a bale of peat in well over a decade, though it has
nothing to do with peat preservation or C02 sequestration. Many years ago
there was a very wet spring in the peat bogs and they couldn't get machinery
in to harvest it, so the price skyrocketed. It was at a time when I was
developing and double digging a largish mixed border. So instead of peat, I
used the much cheaper bags of pine bark mulch that pile up in big box
parking lots every spring. What I learned is that not only is it cheaper, it
is much better as a soil amendment in the ground and in container mixes.
Cheaper and better is a hard combination to beat.
