International Thriller Writers Association
A friend of mine helped to found the ITW, which is profiled in today's LA
Times:
http://www.calendarlive.com/books/cl-ca-thrillers8apr08,0,6166090.story?coll
=cl-books-util
The article describes an organization with 540 authors and 9000 newsletter
subscribers. They just held a luncheon in LA that drew 100 fans who paid
$150 each to meet some of their favorite writers. Each year they hold a
3-day event called ThrillerFest that is open to the public, so that fans can
meet authors, and there are writing workshops for would-be authors. The
organization also promotes each other's books, holds contests to give away
autographed copies, and organizes group book tours where several authors
will go on the road together in hopes of attracting a bigger audience and
more media for everyone. They also hold a cocktail party every year at
BookExpo (the big national book fair sponsored by the American Booksellers
Association) to give booksellers, publishers, media people, etc. a chance to
meet thriller writers. They published an anthology of their member's
stories. Their website lists all of their members' book tour dates. And
they're always coming up with new ways to join forces to promote each
other's work and the thriller genre in general.
There's a similar organization for mystery writers and one for romance
writers. All of them are centered around promoting their books to their
fans, and also to professional development.
All of this got me thinking--what if there was an organization for garden
writers?
Oh, wait....
