Re: Indexing Software

There are several indexing programs available, but probably the most widely
used by professional indexers is Cindex, which runs $500 for either the
Windows
or Mac version and is available from Indexing Research at www.indexres.com.
This was a recent topic of our local Abobe InDesign Users Group and an
ongoing discussion on local DCPubs and graphics list servs. Seems everyone is tasked
with indexing at some time -- from the writer to the editor to the graphic
artist. IMHO, this is clearly a separate specialty and is too often a project
afterthought.
While laying out a publication in InDesign there are built in auto-indexing
features -- as well as nifty plug-ins you can purchase. From all the
discussions I've seen it, due to all the variables and complexities of the process, it
appears that hiring a pro indexer may be well worth it - similar to an
accountant for your taxes. In theory you could do it yourself - but the learning curve
is steep and the hours involved may not be worth DIY in the end.
