growing veggies revisited

I had the pleasure of meeting Rose Marie Nichols McGee in person last
weekend, and as we chatted about various things, I mentioned a
movement in my old home town, and she urged me to tell you people about it.

There's an organization of people in Boulder, Colorado, who are doing
some intensive urban vegetable gardening. Most of the property
they're "farming" is in an old subdivision, Martin Acres. It was
built up before the days of the "fashionable"
don't-plant-veggies-in-front-yard restrictive covenants, so they are
farming some front and back yards. Homeowners pay them $230 to have
their yards dug up, soil tested and amendments added. Kipp Nash,
head of Community Roots, has had some experience with watering
systems, so when they find a yard is sprinklered, he may divert the
system and convert it to drip irrigation. Homeowners may share in
the produce grown in their own yard, but the Community Roots people
harvest most for their CSA clients and to sell at a farmers'
market. They also have the right to sell some to local
restaurants. Nash says people are eager to join the "eat local"
movement, so willingly turn over their landscaping chores to the
Community Roots people. Homeowners pay water bills up to $40 per
month, but Community Roots pays charges that exceed that amount.

They have a website at www.communityrootsboulder.com/ . I learned
of the operation from an article in the Boulder Daily Camera March
19. Margaret Lauterbach
