Cedar & Cocoa Bean Mulches

There was a recent thread on cypress mulch and the environmental damage harvesting cypress does.

When I lived in hot, humid Texas, most gardeners in the know sought either cypress or cedar mulch, as they deterred many insects.  Are there problems with cedar for environmentalists?

Also, what is your feeling about cocoa bean mulch?
