I no longer subscribe to any gardening magazines at all. After several
decades at this, there is little a five paragraph article on any topic can
teach me. Even Horticulture, which once had a meaty piece in every issue has
gone mostly bland. I occasionally pick up something at a newsstand just to
see what others are doing.

There are always gardeners who need five paragraphs on how to plant a
tomatoe. But most mags are not aimed at the small population of
knowledgeable gardeners.

Regular newspaper columns are another matter. People form a habit. When I do
a presentation, the most common comment I get (and I mean that literally)
is, "I don't really garden, but I always read your column." I mix basic
information for the dilettante with more exotic stuff for serious gardeners
and, hopefully, to whet the appetite of those just starting down the road.
But most of all, I make it fun to read. Fun gets and keeps more readers than
how-to.
