Re: Fave Organic Fert reply
Nina,
I used to use a fair amount of horse manure for the same reason. Then it
became common for people to use Grazon on their pastures. It and other long
acting herbicides pass through the animal and will kill your garden. I first
became aware of it years ago when I was working for Extension and a very
good organic gardener came into our office wondering why nothing in his
garden was growing except for corn. He hadn't changed any of his practices -
one of which was to use manure. It turned out that the owner of the animals
had used Grazon, and didn't realize that it would be persistent. Since then,
even relatively conscientious horse owners rarely have an idea whether the
hay they purchase at their local feed store has been contaminated. Some of
them pay extra for alfalfa, but most just take what they can get since we've
had so much drought and their pastures are poor.

I use compost tea on my flowering containers and veggies, and a manure tea
just on the flowers (only because there are horses
on our road and while they have 2 miles of woodland trails, a mile of road
and another mile of gravel back to the stables, they still seem to make
their deliveries in front of our house!ï (I don't use the manure tea on pots
of veggies because some of these horses are on meds and I don't want
even trace amounts winding up in my lettuce or spinach.)
