 It does likely answer, at least in part,  the question of why the veg
garden at my new house has performed so poorly. I was thinking I had
somehow forgotten everything I learned in 30+ years of gardening. I will
ask lots more questions about the straw bales I get at my local IGC, which
I routinely use as thick mulch in the garden. ... I was seriously thinking
about trying some straw bale gardens this summer, since the in-ground beds
just haven't been very productive. Maybe I'll pass and try growing some
green manure crops for a season.
