There are some topics that come up every
year...perhaps ho-hum to us, but to some readers, at least, a reminder of how to
care for holiday plants such as amaryllis and poinsettias is useful.You can put
a new twist on these old standbys by, for example, writing about how a
poinsettia gets from Joe Ecke's ranch to your living room...then doing a sidebar
on care and feeding. In Nov/December: Are we ready for winter - one last
look around the garden: hoses drained and put away? water sprinklers blown out?
birdbath on its side? etc, etc.; gifts from the garden....using materials from
your region...holly, dried plant materials, whatever is suitable to your area;
also gifts FOR the gardener....a review of cool new
stuff/books/tools...Decorating from your garden....From dreary to delightful:
front entrance decorating with potted evergreens and garden materials...Forcing
bulbs, for gifts and for you.. . Starting prize winning onions from seed in
December...starting tuberous begonias from seed in Nov-December....In
January/February....Keeping your holiday plants - how to....planning for
spring...new seed catalogues and new plants....gardens to visit in warm
climates....armchair gardening books. ..starting lettuce indoors for a late
March harvest. That should do you for a few columns. Darlene
