Re: [GWL]: column topics

I always use winter as an opportunity to write about the less-sexy (in terms of photos) but important stories like how to improve soils; the role of mycorrhizal fungi in the soil and how to encourage it; explanation of organic fertilizers; invasive plants and how gardeners can do their part to reduce them; keeping a garden journal and planning next year's garden; etc.

The northeast? Cold country. OK - one thing I do in the cold spell is
start talking about good books for winter reading (and for holiday
gifts) as well as evaluating new tools that have some on the market. A
guide to evaluating a good mail order plant catalog is usually
appreciated about then as well. And this is a time that I use to cover
the more contemplative side of gardening - its benefits, how it relieves
stress and even physical mobility, etc.

Many people use winter to plan new gardens so design topics always seem
to go over well. I've even gotten into projects such as renovating the
outdoor furnishings.
