RE: [GWL]: Computers in the garden

Hi
I've been lurking for quite a while, but thought I'd throw in my two cents
worth about using computers. My principle profession is design and
consulting for resource efficient landscapes--working with developers and
property managers to change landscape maintenance practices to be more
sustainable. I've written for trade magazines, did a newspaper column for a
while and am working on a book proposal.

I use the Kodak digital camera attachment on my Palm IIIxe to document
sites. The quality isn't great, but good enough to record details for later
when I am trying to re construct something from the site. I can get about 30
photos stored on the palm before I need to download--I will probably get
some kind of storage device I can take in the field so I can increase the
number of photos. A lot of the time I take a sequential panorama of a
site--something that would in essence "map" a garden. It is easy to sync the
palm with my computer, then I store the images, which are .jpg format, then
view them as thumbnails.

I want to convince one of my clients to document the site by bar coding the
trees and other woody material so that the maintenance contractor could then
keep an accurate record of chemicals, pruning, etc. There are bar code
readers that attach to palm devises.

What I am looking for right now is software for my palm to make it an
electronic plant key--I would love to be able to take my palm on a hike and
key out some wildflower I see along the way. Anybody run into anything like
that?
