Rita Buchanan used to be associated with Fine Gardening Magazine and 
they might know how to contact her. Try www.finegardening.com.

Also, went to the homesteading library and looked around. Have you 
considered the Foxfire Books? They are compilations from Foxfire 
magazine and are oral histories of homesteading practices in the 
Appalachians collected by high school students in a North Georgia 
school. Eliot Wigginton was their teacher and the series ran to more 
than 6 books (6 is where my set stopped). These books originally came 
out in the mid 70's and covered all manner of homestead practices and 
social mores. My volume 6 has this ISBN: 0-385-15272-8
