As a reporter I would interview some of the execs from companies' that have 
filed for bankruptcy to see what they have to say. If any of the companies 
were public. talk to analysts who research or cover the companies about what 
particular problems they might observe.

You also might talk to folks from Lowe's, Home Depot and other big-box 
retailers to talk about how much of their garden related business has grown 
to see if that's a factor.

I'd also suggest talking to the National Gardening Association to see if 
Bruce Butterfiled has a take on what's happening.
