I have set it up on two occasions.  The first time was outside my first
floor apartment on the patio, with a nice plant sitting on top so the
neighbors would have no clue.  The system works as advertised but only if it
gets attention almost every day.  If it is working well there is no odor.
Like Jeff I got gnats a couple of times but was able to get rid of them with
a mint based insecticide.  Having it sit outside so it gets the rain is
handy because the tea at the bottom is great stuff for plants.  I stopped
the system then because I had to move.  I set it up again here in Central
Michigan last year and it didn't work as well because I would forget about
it for a week or so.  I had more things on my mind and it was sitting out
back where I seldom walked, so it did not remind me of itself as it did when
sitting on my patio in full view every day.
I am reminded that there is a new version of Can-O-Worms but I can't
remember what it is called.  It is supposed to work even better and take
less attention.
I believe it would be great in a family with little kids who could help
remind one of its existence and remind us to recycle our garbage better than
we would do on our own.  As a device to process kitchen wastes in
replacement of the passive compost pile; I don't think it is worth the cost
or the trouble.
