I'm doing a series of articles online called Art and Artists in the Garden. I began with Kirk
Brown's garden, which he had described on this list in manner that intrigued me - I just had to
learn more! . I will also be featuring Susi Torre Bueno's garden but could use another subject or
three, since, as we all know, repetition breeds acceptance.
Accepting of what? Well, the point of the series is that garden art can be traditional or off the
wall - expensive or extremely cheap - but that it can be used in such a way that it is neither
trite nor tacky.
I've been running my infamous Tacky Yard Art contest for five years now - and it started when a
lot of people began to send in descriptions and photos of their gardens asking for opinions -
were they tacky. A lot of people seem afraid to add anything ornamental to their gardens out of
fear that the Yard Art Police will get them. So this series is meant to give them some examples
and to reassure them.
I would love to interview anyone on this list whose garden has some fun and unusual yard art in
it - or who has some relatively trite yard art used in a creative and refreshing way, such as
Susi's Flamingo Parade, which is wonderful. If you think you'd enjoy sharing your yard art and
your ideas on what makes it good and not tacky, please e-mail me off list.

Carol Wallace.
