What has worked for me has been to use the built-in meter in my Nikon as a
starting point. For example, set your camera to automatic or programmed
"aperture priority," set your lens at f8 then your camera will set the time
exposure automatically. You may have 10 to 20 second exposures or longer.
After the first exposure, set the camera to manual, set the lens to f8, then
make numerous exposures that are progressively shorter, then longer, than the
time the camera used automatically. Make your changes in very small
increments. When you get your film back, you can select the exposure that
looks best.
As for film type, slide film is best if the photos are for quality
reproduction. Prints will work for less demanding publications. I would
recommend a medium to slow speed. A high speed film may help if the floating
dock is moving at all due to wind or wave action, but the coarse grain
inherent in higher speed films may degrade the image too much. I'd recommend
Fuji Provia 100 speed film - good for green subjects. Trial and error will
yield some good results, so, if you can, try different film speeds and
bracket your exposures a lot. If you have to travel quite a distance for your
night photo session, you may want to do some test shots at a pond or lake
near home before you go.
Your subject sounds very interesting. Please let us know how it turns out,
and maybe put some of your "winners" on the GWL photo site.
