[GWL]: fighting the corporate giants

Periodically since joining this list serve I have seen numerous letters
primarily from writers lamenting the current attempts by Gannett and other
major publishers to essentially usurp virtually all rights now and forever
from writers. As the latest spate of letters regarding Hearst and Gannett all
too well illustrates major publishers are no longer playing by the "old
rules" and will certainly continue to try and use any leverage they and
their lawyers can think of. Though the Tasini case was an important decision
for of us who are freelance creators this case in and of itself is not going
to protect us and our means of livlihood.

I suppose in the "good old days" a freelancer could make a pretty decent
living and not have to worry much about losing all control over their work
and worse, being paid a one time fee for work which could then be used over
and over, re-packaged,
sold, put on line, or in short used to generate continued income for the
publishers on the backs of the original creators. Well guess what folks
those "good old days" are over! So what to do? Well maybe its time that
freelancers of all stripe - writers,
illustrators, photographers -- all us creative content producers adopted a
new way of doing business.

The ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers) in conjunction with the
CVA
(Coalition of Visual Artists); GAG ( Graphic Artists Guild) IPA
(Illustrators Partnership of America), numerous other professional
photographers groups have come together to create a co-op business model
expressly for WRITERS photographers and illustrators. You do NOT have to be
a member of ANYTHING to join the co-op. It costs 100 bucks which is fully
refundable. And you become part of a collective group of content creators
with must I add much more contract leverage power then you or I standing
alone ever could. Sound too good to be true? Check out
www.mira.com - www. asmp.org - call up Johnathan Tasini whatever!!!!

The good old days are gone but the new days can be a hell of a lot better for
all of us IF we take collective action instead of fighting both the
publishers and each other for those jobs - for our rights - for our livlihood!
