Re: [GWL]: "Organic" - catchword or reality?
Yes, yeesh. My experience here in the deepest south is that people think
organic means nontoxic, if they think about it at all. That is, to spray a
'chemical' is dangerous, but to use an organic flower dust isn't. This is
indeed an education problem which we writers must face unless we are willing
to dodge the hard questions from our audiences, or give them simplistic
answers to difficult questions. My approach is simply cast and follows Jeff
Ball's pattern in a way: suggest a cultural approach to the problem, then an
organic intervention, then if necessary to save the tree (since that's where
this started) consider the 'recommended' chemical solution.
In the chain on applying pesticides, I hope the message is clear: always
time to avoid pollinators, spray with a discreet nozzle only impacted plants
using the least toxic substance possible, and repeat only if the problem
reappears or persists.
We have been told in the south that it's impossible to garden organically -
too long a growing season, too many bugs, but I was taught to garden by my
grandfather back in the fifties, and he was an organic gardener. Then I did
my graduate work in horticulture in the seventies at LSU, a very mainstream
a&m university, so I know both sides of the road quite well.
I'd like to know if there are similar myths around the country.
