Title: Re: [GWL]: Toxic topic
Greg: It's not the length of the topic that makes me nervous, it's the fact that, as you note, discussions of it can get nasty. The worst flame war I ever saw started over this topic on a gardening list I belong to. Thus far the members of this list have been much more civil, which is why I've let the thread go on. Personally, I'm a second generation organic (for lack of a simpler way to say it) gardener, and I put an extensive section on organic growing in my grape book. I found a considerable number of ways to deal with pests that don't have to involve killing them, or at least not killing them with poison, of any sort. The main snag is that it involves educating the grower. I say "snag" because too many gardeners like the quick fix over learning the insect's life cycle so (for example) they can cultivate at the right time to bury eggs or pupae to prevent their hatching. Or time to grow a trap crop. Or... In short, poison is popular because it's EASY. But it's easy mostly because the person isn't willing to learn something else that might be just as easy, if they knew how. Nuff said. -Lon ---------- From: Greg Quinn <ghquinn@bestweb.net> To: Gardenwriters@topica.com Subject: [GWL]: Toxic topic Date: Sun, Aug 26, 2001, 5:59 AM Lon, I know this thread has been going on for a while. In my classes at the New York Botanical Garden, I find this to be the single most confusing, fearsome and charged topic. ============================================================ Deal with it!
