Re: [GWL]: Country Living Magazine
Darlene:
"Graphs" is short for paragraphs. Why they do it I have no idea. I sometimes
write a paragraph that's 50 words, sometimes less than 25. A poor measure I
would say. When first heard it I studied the newspaper whose editor used the
term, and found that she had edited my articles so most paragraphs were
around 45 words. Made sense from her perspective.
Way back when (early 40s) when I did newspaper work, a header was called a
"subtitle"--same thing. I did headline writing for a spell and the style book
required subtitles for certain heads.
Since it doesn't seem that these terms are universal, maybe it's just
California--lots of fruits and nuts here. End of cutlines etc.
