Gene -
My "day job" is for a horticultural printing company that licenses the use
of photos for plant tags, catalogs and the like. It very well may be the
same company you are dealing with, though there are several who make plant
tags. The rates requested by photographers for licensing use on plant tags
varies from $50 up to around $125 for 35mm slides, and up to $150 for 4x5
transparencies. The average price paid by my company for 35mm slide usage is
around $75. Another factor is the rarity of the subject and how unique the
image is.
The photographer sets the rate, and the company can negotiate, accept or
decline. If your image is tack sharp, well exposed, shows a healthy specimen
in a landscape setting, and it is the only slide submitted for a particular
subject, you can command the higher range of price.
These rates are very low compared to editorial use in the larger magazines,
books, etc. But if you have lots of them over a period of time, it can be a
plus. As you said, it's nothing glamorous, but it's money.
I hope this helps.
