FW: [NAFEX] USDA Pomological Watercolors

I'm posting this for two reasons. First, some of these would be excellent
for illustrating articles. Second, there are some really excellent old
books that have beautiful color plates of fruit and the books are often cut
up for their illustrations. It would be wonderful if someone could produce
prints of some of these, not only for their own beauty, but to help save the
destruction of some of the old books.

Subject: [NAFEX] USDA Pomological Watercolors

You should be interested to know about the collection of historic
Pomological Watercolors that were produced by USDA artists to document new
fruit introductions before the advent of color photography. There are
more than 7000 of these images stored at the National Agriclutural Library
in Beltsville, MD. I am happy to announce that all 350 of the pear images
from this collection, and a handful of the other crops, have been scanned
and are available on the web. Our repository has an index page with
links to the pear and other images at:

http://www.ars-grin.gov/cor/pwc.html

The National Agricultural Library also has some representative pomological
images available at:

http://www.nal.usda.gov/speccoll/collect/pomology.html

I think you will enjoy knowing about this resource,

- Joseph
