One of the reasons I stopped writing for magazines. Someone submitted a very lengthy ms and photos for a story on a wonderful garden to a well known magazine. They thought the garden was worthy of a feature, but the writing was just dreadful. The magazine editor called me and asked if I would please rewrite the story. It sounded a bit dicey -- stealing a story from the writer who had submitted it -- and I demurred.  She promised a premium payment over the standard (which she later stiffed me on) and I reconsidered.  My professional standards have their limits. I visited the garden, wrote the story, which they liked. Then she sent me three 8 X 11 sleeves of slides the original writer had taken and asked me to write captions for all of them, since she didn't know which ones the designer would use.

No, give me newspapers any time. Newspaper editors are too busy for that kind of crap.
