Margaret,
Your publisher is short-sighted, as we all know. There are always new gardeners, it's one thing that keeps us all in business (didn't I just write about bulb basics two years ago?). I write for one of two dailies in Seattle — yes, the city is one of the few left with two newspapers. It's not a pretty picture, however, what with the joint operating agreement and all. But on the gardening side, the region's got it made. We have five writers appearing each Thursday (real garden writers, not reporters). The other paper has two writers appearing on Wed. and a splashy article in the Sunday magazine. Not only that, but outside the Seattle metropolitan area, there are newspapers that carry regular garden features (not just a column).
All that is to say it could go up in smoke in a moment, but at least I know my editor is on our side.
Also — each year at the Northwest Flower & Garden Show, a survey is conducted among attendees. The average attendance is 80,000; the majority of those visitors are in the 50+ age bracket.
