Re: Terrific Story & Photo Opportunity


I write about the AAS winners, but sometimes with tongue in cheek, usually with a caveat that the winner may or may not do its thing well in Southern California. I do go to the AAS trials, but in this area they're all located in areas with a coastal climate, pretty much far removed from the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts, or the inland valleys of SoCal.

I usually ask AAS for seed samples and grow them out myself here before I go all out in favor or against the winner.

And I agree that many old varieties are often better than new ones, particularly in climates not known for benign summers.

And varieties offered by one seed company these days are subject to some inspection as to their origin. We need to bear in mind that many of the major seed companies today do not grow anything--they buy from a rapidly declining list of seed producers, here in the US and off shore.
