While it it true that what you are selling is time (and knowledge I hope), what the magazine is buying is space. They don't care how many hours you spend, they figure how much it will cost to fill a page with print and pictures. So, sure, figure out your time investment. But if your hours are worth more to you than a page of text (by the word) is to the publisher, there's no deal.
 
When it comes to garden writing, it's a buyer's market.
