Title: Re: [GWL] question about rates There's a factor in this I haven't seen broached yet. If you sell your work and only give the publisher first NA print rights, you may indeed get a rather low rate. But this is based on only selling an item ONCE. If the piece is decent and not dated, or can be easily updated later, you can re-sell it later, often as many times as you want. And if you write your articles with a general theme of some sort in mind, collecting articles to publish as an anthology, or making a book out of them is a great way to get additional, long term income.
I have sold articles to publications in the east that never reach where I live, then did a little editing and re-sold the piece later to someone in another part of the country.
In short, a well written piece shouldn't be a one-time thing.

As a new person to this group, I have been following this topic of pay with interest. I am somewhat new to writing for national markets, but worked for many years as a Human Resource manager negotiating salaries and it¹s not that different: supply and demand set the rate. I totally agree with the theory of figuring out how many hours it will take you to write something before deciding for yourself whether it¹s worth it.
