RE: selling your book
I just finished publishing my book POD through booklocker.com. It cost me
$199 to set up the book. The cover was free if I had my own artwork and
$99-$199 if I used their artist. It cost more for color inserts, but I
didn't use them.
The process was easy and they helped walk me through it. Putting the book
into PDF format is not as bad as it sounds.
I looked carefully at many POD companies, and some will charge you extra
money for add on marketing services, etc. Some will charge you one larger
fee up front for a package that includes all of these services. Booklocker
has a great page of marketing tips and advice for free, so I decided to use
them rather than pay another company more for a package or for all the
upcharges.
The selling price is $11.95, which was the minimum set by them based on the
length. You can go higher than that but not lower. This is not cheap for a
paperback once you add the shipping. My royalties are 35%, less for books
ordered through amazon and barnes and noble (which they handled)
I have been purchasing boxes of 100 of my book for $4.99 each, plus $20
shipping. The cost goes up if I order less and down if I order more. I think
I'm supposed to charge everyone $11.95 so that I don't undercut booklocker.
However by buying 100 at a time, I have been able to sell them to friends
and family for $8-$10 directly, with no shipping. It has worked well but I
don't think I'd be able to put the book on my website for a lower price.

Hi, Esther,
Good questions!
The upfront costs of POD seem to be much less than those for traditional
printing. BookSurge is quoting a setup cost of $99. That is if the books are
sold and shipped through them.
However, there are additional costs for color inserts and for buying short
run quantities of your own book, such as those you would want for review
copies and for certain other wholesale and retail orders. I am having
trouble finding out just what these costs are. The books probably cost more
per piece than a traditional printing would be, but it still keeps you from
having to order several thousand with no idea how many of them you can sell.
I am looking for ways to keep my inventory down, for I work from home and
the books keep taking up more and more space. I don't send out so many of
the old books as review copies and POD seems like a good way to keep old
books in print and also introduce new ones. Then if the sales are strong I
might also do a regular printing.
BookSurge does not restrict the ways you can produce and sell your own book.
My main problem right now is in submitting books in the PDF format they
require, but I think I can do it.
I hope to know more than this, pretty soon. I'll keep you informed.
With best wishes,
Betty

Hi Betty,
Good information. Are/were there up front payments for setting up POD? How
do they compare generally with what it takes for you to publish a book?

<snip>
My next adventure will be with Print on Demand (POD), which involves the
printer printing and shipping the books to the customers, whether wholesale
or retail, and sending me reports and checks. No warehousing or shipping for
me to do. I'll keep you posted once I get a POD title out there, sometime
this year.
For more info on POD, check out www.BookSurge.com .
With best wishes,
