Right now heirloom vegetable growing is so popular it's just about mainstream. Along with that is a growing interest in seed saving---the two go hand in hand. But where does a new seed saver turn for information?
One place is the Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy's fall conference, where Merlyn Niedens will be among the featured speakers. Merlyn, who grows seed commercially for companies such as Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, will lead a double session on the fundementals of seed saving. He'll be looking at how to save seed from virtually every common vegetable type.
The AHSC Fall Conference will be held October 21-23, at the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center, in Berea, Kentucky. Along with the line-up of speakers, there will be formal seed swaps, and lots of time for heirloom's enthusiasts to get together informally.
Non-members are welcome at the conference.
The Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy is a non-profit organizations whose mission is to preserve the heirloom crop plants and sustainable agricultural practices of the states in the mountain south.
For complete details about the conference or AHSC membership, contact AHSC, Box 519, Richmond, KY 40476, 859-623-2765, KentuckySeeds@hotmail.com.
So, what's the easy article? Working garden writers are welcome to attend the conference at no charge. In addition to a story about seed saving, all of our other speakers are column possibilities. But AHSC makes good copy itself. Contact me in advance for details.
