To some degree, yes. But mostly I think it was naivete on their part.
They were promised that Heronswood would remain the same and the gardens
would stay intact.
George Ball's explanation for his actions this spring? 'Well, things
change.' His vision for the gardens? A series of condominiums built
around them.
Not to mention that he issued a press release about shutting down the
Seattle Heronswood office BEFORE even notifying Dan Hinkley and Robert
Jones. Then Burpee immediately fired Heronswood staff and posted a
security guard to prevent access to the grounds.
Maybe the changes needed to be done from a business perspective, but
there's a human way and a mean-spirited way to do things. George Ball
clearly chose the latter.
