OKC attractions
To answer the question about OKC - I am a member of GWA who moved to OK from CA a few years ago. In retirement, I write a weekly garden colum and blog for my town's local newspaper www.muskogeephoenix.com where my pen name is Molly Day.
I'm not attending the conference but can assure you that you will not drown in OKC. Let me know what interests you - do you want restuarant ideas or gardens to visit or just interesting attractions?
Don't miss Myriad Gardens, National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum (sounds hokey but is remarkable nonethless), and Brick Town is a tourist-section that has lots of bars and restaurants with music. Websites for these three:

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is pleasant http://okcmoa.com/ and the restaurant at the museum is a treat.
I have collected some restaurant ideas for the area if you want them and would be happy to find out other information in advance of your trip.
One of the features of Oklahoma that you will notice is that everything costs less here than in most other locations of similar size.
