Re: late blight
Well I wrote about late blight the same week it was reported to have been
found at the big box store near Southampton...I called my editor and said
she had to stop the presses...at the last minute they got the information
into the paper but on the wrong page. Ok, worse has happened. Now I
haven't grown tomatoes for years but this year I was sent six plants to trial so
I set them up in my garden and took very good care of them. The plants
were staked but when they got to six feet had to be re staked and they were
loaded with fruits. The whitefly set in but was easily controlled when
sprayed with a pyrethrum spray at dusk. Not a hint of septoria or late
blight....not a hint. Some of the fruits began to show signs of a pinkish tint so
I figured I was only days away from harvest. You know how the story goes
from here don't ya? Late blight right? Nope...130 year old maple tree
comes down and destroys the garden on a clear, windless wonderful summer day.
