Re: Japanese Beetle update
Hi, Lois!
Lois wrote, "...Japanese beetles appear to be gone from our yard, here in NW New Jersey..."
I have to agree w/you. We noticed the same thing about 3 weeks ago here in northwest Ct. My morning hunts yielded very few Japanese beetles and even with our recent hot weather they haven't reappeared. I thought they may have dropped to lay eggs and were waiting to reappear to feed again, but no sign of them. The final test will be to see whether or not the grass starts to brown as the grubs (which I hope we got with our program of nematodes and Milky Spore) start to feed on the roots. The crows are few and far between as well which is a good sign that the grubs are also sparse. So maybe we have succeeded in our program of working that beetle population down. And of course, the cooler weather earlier this season has to be a factor!
Would that I could see the same progress with the lily leaf beetle next year and slugs, the two insects that have taken the most time and effort this season.
