cameras on trips

Taking photographs helps me SEE a place. When I'm holding a camera, I notice light, details, angles, composition, pattern, etc. When I observe those beautiful details and I don't have a camera, I feel terribly frustrated that I can't capture them. But then I can't draw my way out of a paper bag and my visual memory is poor, so photography is an important enhancement to my experience.

The purpose of the trip is not photography but surely there will be beauty along the way. Which wins out: easier backpacking or truly capturing a once in a lifetime trip? I go back and forth, depending on the temperature. Can anyone convince me not to be lazy?
