Is there a consensus on capitalizing vegetable names? Squash, Carrots, Parsley? Squash, carrots, parsley?
Thanks.

When the choice is mine, I prefer what the Chicago Manual calls "down style": squash, carrots, parsley. If I were adding modifiers, I'd keep them lowercase if they're more generic (romano beans, butternut squash, cherry tomatoes) but capitalize if I'm emphasizing a certain variety or using an actual cultivar name (Mrs. Marotti's romano bean, Waltham butternut squash, Tommy Toe cherry tomatoes).

Also depends on the audience. So for native plants, I'll write bigberry manzanita or Pacific Mist manzanita for the newspaper column, but Arctostaphylos glauca or Arctostaphylos 'Pacific Mist' for the native plant society newsletter.
