Re: hot pepper flakes?

I am a huge animal lover and spent part of my time this winter digging
thru the 4 ft of Feb. snow to actually feed three deer, one of whom was
injured. I think this later might be a little over the edge. I find that the
homemade remedies work for a while but they are messy, smelly and don't last as
long as the stuff you buy like Hot Pepper Wax, Liquid Fence and the like.
I do a tank mix of Hot Pepper Wax and Liquid Fence and find that it not
give a odor deterrent but a taste deterrent as well, especially with the young
fawns. Soap loses its fragrance and to be honest who wants soap ornaments
hanging in their landscape? I also find that most home concoctions require
application more frequently than commercial brands.
You have to remember that the deer population will differ in food
preferences from area to area because of learned behavior and the varietal
differences. Like I say, "Deer are like people, some like Italian and some like
Chinese."

A reader recently went up one side of me and down the other over a
recommendation in my column concerning use of hot pepper flakes to deter
critters. I can't find much on adverse aspects of such use. Am I missing
something?
