When I booked the speakers for the NYBG's winter lecture series we had a budget of between 3 and 5K for the season, which included 6 speakers.  The amount per speaker depended on several things, including individual credentials, anticipated draw, and travel considerations.  I usually started with an offer of $500.  That's also my minimum fee for a single, one hour slide/powerpoint lecture.  Travel expenses are additional.  Gigs involving an overnight stay are priced higher as are keynotes, workshops, and longer presentations.  I give discounts for additional lectures at a single venue.

You get what you pay for.  If you want a professional, expect to pay for one.  And if you are a professional, demand to be paid like one.
