Re: Kumato report

Duane, how big are your plants? What's the leaf to tomato ratio? The great Roz Creasy told a bunch of us at a roundtable discussion that having a lot of leaf surface per tomato is a factor in good flavor.
In my own experience, that dark purple color is flavorful, too. I was given a 'Cherokee Purple' heritage tomato and grew its seeds on for several generations.

Among the third generation plants was one with pink tomatoes. It tasted good but seemed more susceptible to disease than the others.
This year my neighbor at my community garden had a forest of volunteer tomatoes in her raised bed ("weeds" to Duane). She had grown heritage and other tomatoes there the year before.
She got rid of most of them but gave me a trowelful and kept a few growing herself. I got some cherry-sized purple tomatoes on big plants and they have that Kumato flavor. I also got a small one that is loaded with tiny red fruits. It is in a pot and looks cute.

Well it is all food and all fun.
Cheers and happy summer, everyone,
Betty
