I had a similar problem today. Fortunately Norton AV picked it up.
Downloading my email I had an apparently empty e-mail which behaved oddly
when it arrived. (Note technical terminology {:~})

NAV told me that it had infected Windows\Systems\kernel32.exe - virus name
Badtrans.B@mm. Having put it into quarantine found three affected files in
addition and quarantined them all. Treated them by deleting or repairing as
appropriate. Now, fingers crossed, everything seems OK and a virus scan
picks up no nasties.
